In 2011 the Volvo S60 was awarded by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) for passenger and highway safety. We see the S60 is continuing to stay as one of the safest new Volvo vehicles.

With the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) implementing new crash safety tests, many luxury models that were tested didn't earn acceptable results. One of the models that did however, was the 2012 Volvo S60, which earned the highest rating of "good".
It's no real surprise that the Volvo S60 would become the highest-rated European luxury vehicle among those tested, given its solid reputation towards safety over its decades of existence. The small overlap frontal crash test has 25-percent of the driver's side of the vehicle striking a 5-foot tall barrier at 40 mph in order to replicate the scenario where a vehicle hits another vehicle or a stationary object such as a tree or pole. The IIHS has concluded that a noticeable number of deaths result from these types of crashes.
"When we decided to build a world-class sports sedan we made sure it was a great Volvo first and foremost," said John Maloney, president and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America. "We set the benchmark on safety, and we continue to lead the crowd."
