Volvo Brand History

On April 14, 1927 Volvo was founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was originally a subsidiary of the ball bearing manufacturer SKF, until in 1935, a separate company named AB Volvo was introduced onto the Stockholm stock exchange. Fastforward to 1999, AB Volvo sold Volvo Cars to the Ford Motor Company and then was sold to the Geely Holding Group based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang in 2010. Volvo was originally founded on quality and safety, which Volvo still holds prominent to this day. By 2025, Volvo anticipates that about 50% of the cars that they will produce and sell will be electric because they want to consume less energy and reduce their carbon footprint by 40%.

Noteworthy Inventions

  • 1959 - A Volvo engineer, named Nils Bohlin, designed the first-ever three-point safety belt - years before it would become available in most cars. Volvo also pioneered safety belts in the rear seat and a three-point safety belt on the rear seat mid-position. The rear safety belts are vital for the passengers using them, but also for the occupants in front. The three-point safety belt is one of the most important inventions for mankind and it is the most important protective safety feature in the car.
  • 1972 - Volvo took the basic principles of astronauts lying on their backs during take-off to even out the force of their bodies, by creating an industry-first rearward-facing child seat that would help spread the load and minimize injury in children.
  • 1978 - Volvo created the first belt-positioning booster cushion for children which allowed children from 4 years old to travel facing forward, with increased protection and comfort.

Innovation

The Volvo brand believes that technology should set us free - not hinder us or restrict us. That's why Volvo focuses on three major key innovations in every single car that comes off of their production line.

Safety

Since 1927, Volvo's founders have decided to focus on safety as one of the core values of the company and have since been a leader in the field. Volvo's main vision is that nobody should be injured or killed in a new Volvo. To help their vision become a success, Volvo has added standard safety equipment in all new Volvo cars that's referred to as IntelliSafe.

IntelliSafe includes:

City Safety

City Safety helps protect people inside and outside the car by spotting potential danger and helping you to avoid it. Volvo Cars was the first to introduce this type of safety system as standard in every Volvo car. City Safety uses radar and camera technology to identify other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians and large animals, whether it's daytime or nighttime.

  • Collision avoidance
  • Lane keeping aid
  • Run-off road mitigation
  • Cross traffic alert with auto brake
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
  • Surround view camera
  • Connected safety

Active and connected safety systems

Volvo's approach to safety is unique. They've been studying car crashes in great detail since the 1970s and have developed a range of features that help to mitigate crashes, improve driver alertness, communicate speed limits and even communicate directly to other cars when there's danger on the road ahead with their Slippery Road and Hazard Light Alert features.

Volvo understands the most common cause of collisions and single vehicle crashes and have developed features to help mitigate a wide range of potential scenarios that could result in a collision or a car leaving the road unintelligently.

Technology

Sensus refers to Volvo's connected services, navigation, in-car entertainment and audio system innovation areas. It's designed to keep you in full control, thanks to the touch screen interface, logical operation and ease of use. The latest voice control and smartphone interoperability, via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensures that you'll always remain connected.

Volvo's aim is to give back one week of quality time per year through a new Volvo car by 2025. Volvo will do this by using technology as a tool to help you live a better and more fulfilling life.

Electrification

Volvo's future is electric and they anticipate that 50% of their cars sold until 2025, will be electric. Currently, Volvo has both Pure Electric and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles.

Pure Electric consists of no tailpipe carbon dioxide or nitrogen oxide emissions while driving, a pure electric powertrain provides a supremely inspiring, silent and refined drive, with an instant torque for fast take-offs and smooth, linear acceleration at all speeds, and it has a large battery that gives you a long range while driving. Volvo's first pure electric SUV is the XC40 Recharge.

Plug-In Hybrid is Volvo's no-compromise combination of plug-in battery electric power and an efficient gasoline engine that provides low to zero tailpipe emissions, excellent flexibility and a powerful driving experience. It allows for easy charging, the use of Volvo On Call benefits, additional warranty benefits and federal tax credits. Volvo's Plug-In Hybrid models are: XC90 Recharge, XC60 Recharge, S90 Recharge, S60 Recharge and V60 Recharge.

Patrick Dealer Group's History with Volvo

In 1904 Detroit Michigan, Hanley Dawson IV's great grandfather made the acquaintance of the legendary Henry Ford. Ford's automobile manufacturing plant was located across the street from the bank where he worked. His great grandfather offered to sell used cars returned to the Ford plant, and eventually was granted the opportunity to sell new cars off the assembly line.

In 1907, his great grandfather was awarded the first new Ford franchise in the Midwest.

In 1951, Hanley Dawson Jr. took over the dealership from his father. 20 years later, in 1971 the family business moved to Chicago, on the corner of Rush and Ontario Street, and Hanley Dawson Jr. was awarded the first and only Chicago Cadillac factory retail branch operation. Hanley Dawson Jr. and his son, Hanley Dawson III, ran that business known as Hanley Dawson Cadillac until the early 1990's.

In 1977, Hanley Dawson III set out on his own and started the Patrick Dealer Group, named after his youngest son Patrick.

In 1991, Patrick Volvo Cars was established at 1600 E Higgins Rd, Schaumburg, IL 60173 and has been thriving ever sense.

Patrick Volvo Cars is Celebrating 30 years in 2021!

Patrick is celebrating 30 years with Volvo and with this milestone has brought about several other milestones for the Patrick Dealer Group. In the over thirty years of partnership, the relationship between Patrick and Volvo has been strengthened into a tremendous relationship.
