Wondering what car you should buy?

Here is a look a why you should consider buying a Volvo.

They started making cars in 1927 because they believed nobody else was making them strong enough or safe enough for Swedish roads. Along the way we've come up with dozens of innovations, some of which have changed the world. And it's this commitment that drives us forward to the next great Volvo Cars idea.

1. They're safe. Yes, let's get the best-known feature out of the way first. Volvo's are indeed safe. Very safe. The company builds some of the safest cars on the road and it takes its reputation very seriously. It invented the three-point seatbelt in 1959, the seatbelt reminder in 1972 and the side impact protection system in 1991, for example.

2. Design. Many people will thing of Volvo and immediately think of boxy cars, but that 80s/90s look has long been jettisoned. The current crop of models exude a smart Scandi design image, something that has been ramped up in the new XC90, the first of a new generation of models.

3. Look out. Over the next four years, Volvo is going to completely revamp its model line-up and, if the XC90 is anything to go by, they're all going to look pretty cool, in a minimalist, conservative way. Volvo is planning an all-electric car in 2019

4. Efficiency. The company has recently developed its own range of Drive-E engines that are not only clever in the way that they save fuel, but also in the way that they're modular, so both the petrol and diesel units can be adapted to become hybrids in the future.

5. And talking of the future… Well, it's already here. Volvo has already launched the first of those Drive-E engines with hybrid capability, in the form of the V60 Plug-in Hybrid. With just 48g/km of CO2 and a fuel economy figure of 155.2mpg, this is one of the cheapest-to-run cars currently on the road - and especially handy if you live in a built-up area large town or city where you can just use electric power.

6. And even further in the future… Volvo is planning an all-electric car in 2019, which will rival the likes of the Tesla Model S with a range of over 200 miles.

7. Did we mention safety? Oh, yes, we did. But we forgot to mention that Volvo also invented a whiplash protection system and a curtain airbag, both in 1998. A busy year for the safety department, obviously.

8. Great for all the family. If you're looking for a family car, Volvo has them in spades. After all, this is the company that invented the rear-facing child seat and today offers booster seats built into the rear seats. The XC60 is a particular favorite of ours: it's not the best car in its class, but it's a very good all-round crossover that works well as a car for families with young children, thanks to its comfort, classy interior design and, obviously, safety features.

9. At the forefront of self-driving technology. Volvo will run a real-world experiment in Gothenburg in 2017 with 100 XC90s with self-driving technology onboard being used by actual Volvo customers for their daily commute.

10. The coolest interiors? Recent Volvos have had some really classy, cool interiors, but he company's designers have gone further with the XC90, introducing even more minimalist Scandi-design elements. With all the company's cars refreshed in the next few years, we expect that the company's cabins will be cooler than a Swedish winter.

11. It's still focused on safety. In recent years, Volvo has added a roll-over protection system, a blind spot information system, a city safety autonomous emergency braking system and pedestrian detection system with auto braking in the last few years. It has also dedicated itself to its Vision 2020 programmes, which pledges that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car. A bold objective, but we wouldn't bet against them.
