A Legacy of Safety and Innovation: The Volvo Story

Volvo was founded on April 14, 1927, in Gothenburg, Sweden, by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. Originally a subsidiary of the ball bearing manufacturer SKF, Volvo became an independent entity in 1935 when AB Volvo was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

In 1999, AB Volvo sold its car division, Volvo Cars, to Ford Motor Company. A decade later, in 2010, Volvo Cars was acquired by Geely Holding Group, based in Hangzhou, China.

From the very beginning, Volvo has prioritized quality and safety-principles that still define the brand today. Looking ahead, Volvo is committed to sustainability: by 2025, the company aims for 50% of its global sales to be electric vehicles, aligning with its mission to reduce energy consumption and lower its carbon footprint by 40%.

Noteworthy Volvo Safety Inventions

  • 1959 - The Three-Point Safety Belt
Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin invented the world's first three-point safety belt, a groundbreaking innovation that arrived decades before it became standard in most vehicles. Volvo didn't stop there-they introduced rear seatbelts and were the first to include a three-point belt in the rear center seat. These advancements protect not only rear passengers but also help prevent injury to front occupants during collisions. The three-point seatbelt is widely regarded as one of the most important safety inventions in automotive history.

  • 1972 - Rear-Facing Child Seat
Inspired by the position astronauts take during launch to distribute force evenly, Volvo introduced the industry's first rear-facing child seat. This innovation was designed to minimize injuries in the event of a crash by spreading the impact forces across the child's back and head.

  • 1978 - Booster Cushion for Children
Volvo developed the first belt-positioning booster cushion, allowing children as young as four to safely ride forward-facing while improving both comfort and protection. This design laid the foundation for today's child safety standards.

Innovation at the Heart of Volvo

At Volvo, innovation is about empowering drivers, not overwhelming them. The brand believes technology should enhance freedom, not create limitations. That's why every Volvo is built with a focus on three core pillars of innovation: Safety, Sustainability, and Smart Technology-ensuring each vehicle delivers a seamless blend of performance, protection, and modern convenience.

A Legacy of Safety

Since its founding in 1927, Volvo has made safety a core value-and remains a global leader in automotive safety to this day. Guided by the bold vision that no one should be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo, the company continues to push the boundaries of protective technology.

To bring this vision to life, every new Volvo is equipped with IntelliSafe-a comprehensive suite of standard safety features designed to prevent accidents and protect everyone on the road.

IntelliSafe includes:

City Safety: Intelligent Protection for All

Volvo was the first automaker to introduce City Safety as a standard feature across its entire vehicle lineup. This groundbreaking system is designed to protect not just those inside the car, but everyone around it.

Using advanced radar and camera technology, City Safety can detect other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, and even large animals-both day and night. When a potential collision is identified, the system can alert the driver and, if necessary, automatically apply the brakes to help avoid or reduce the impact.

City Safety is just one more way Volvo delivers on its promise to make driving safer for everyone.

  • Collision avoidance
  • Lane keeping aid
  • Run-off road mitigation
  • Cross traffic alert with auto brake
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
  • Surround view camera
  • Connected safety

Active and Connected Safety Systems

Volvo takes a holistic and forward-thinking approach to safety. Since the 1970s, the brand has studied real-world car crashes in detail to better understand their causes-and to develop features that help prevent and mitigate them.

Volvo's active and connected safety technologies are designed to enhance driver awareness, reduce the risk of collisions, and communicate potential dangers in real time. Features like Slippery Road Alert and Hazard Light Alert allow Volvo vehicles to share critical information with each other-warning drivers about hazardous road conditions or sudden stops ahead.

By identifying the most common causes of collisions and off-road incidents, Volvo has engineered systems that help drivers respond to a wide range of scenarios-before they become accidents.

Technology

Sensus is Volvo's advanced suite of connected services, navigation, entertainment, and audio innovations, all designed to keep you informed, entertained, and in control. Featuring a sleek touchscreen interface, intuitive controls, and seamless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Sensus ensures you stay connected without distraction.

Volvo's broader vision is to use technology to enhance your life-not complicate it. By 2025, Volvo aims to give drivers back the equivalent of one full week of quality time each year through smart, user-focused innovations that reduce stress and elevate everyday driving.

Volvo's Electric Future

Volvo is committed to an electric future, with a goal that 50% of all cars sold by 2025 will be fully electric. Today, Volvo offers both Pure Electric and Plug-In Hybrid models to meet diverse driving needs.

Pure Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, delivering a quiet, refined driving experience with instant torque for quick acceleration and smooth power delivery at all speeds. Their large batteries provide a long driving range, making them practical for everyday use.

Plug-In Hybrid models combine an efficient gasoline engine with a rechargeable electric battery, offering low to zero tailpipe emissions without sacrificing flexibility or power. These vehicles are easy to charge, come with benefits like Volvo On Call, extended warranties, and potential federal tax credits

Patrick Dealer Group's History with Volvo

The Dawson family's automotive journey began in 1904 in Detroit, Michigan, when Hanley Dawson IV's great-grandfather met the legendary Henry Ford. Working at a bank across from Ford's early manufacturing plant, he saw an opportunity-offering to sell used cars returned to the plant. His dedication paid off when he was later granted the privilege to sell new Ford vehicles directly off the assembly line.

By 1907, he was awarded the first new Ford franchise in the Midwest, marking the beginning of a family legacy in the automotive business.

In 1951, his son, Hanley Dawson Jr., took over the dealership. Two decades later, in 1971, the business moved to Rush and Ontario Streets in Chicago, where Dawson Jr. was awarded the first and only Cadillac factory retail branch operation in the city. Together with his son, Hanley Dawson III, they operated Hanley Dawson Cadillac until the early 1990s.

In 1977, Hanley Dawson III launched his own venture-Patrick Dealer Group-named after his youngest son, Patrick.

By 1991, Patrick Volvo Cars was established at 1600 E Higgins Rd in Schaumburg, IL, where it has been serving customers and growing ever since.
