And now that our favorite automaker is paving the way for inductive charging, the future has never looked brighter.

If you're unfamiliar with the technology, inductive charging allows an individual to recharge an electronic device without actually having to plug anything in. If you've seen it before, you've probably seen it in the form of smartphones or tablets that can be charged by placing them on a special charging pad. As for how Volvo is using it, they're working from the ground up.

With the help of an EV Volvo C30, our engineers have been hard at work developing a charging pad of sorts for their future plug-in models. Rather than physically plug their vehicle into a charging station, a driver would simply park their EV in a spot that's outfitted with a charging pad and let the technology do the work for them.

Needless to say, this kind of undertaking can't be achieved overnight, but with EVs becoming more prevalent than ever, the need is most certainly there.

"Inductive charging has great potential. Cordless technology is a comfortable and effective way to conveniently transfer energy. The study also indicates that it is safe," says Lennart Stegland, vice president of electric propulsion systems at Volvo Car Group. "There is not yet any common standard for inductive charging. We will continue our research and evaluate the feasibility of the technology in our hybrid- and electric-car projects."1
