The Swedish automaker has enjoyed unexpected success with a diesel plug-in hybrid version of the V60 in Europe, increasing production volumes twice to meet demand.
Volvo's vice president of corporate communications, Dean Shaw, has mentioned that along with moving entirely to four-cylinder engines, all buyers will have the option of electrified power-trains as well. The move will significantly reduce Volvo's average carbon dioxide emissions and could establish it as a leader in clean power-train technology.
Volvo currently sells a range of sedan and SUV models in the US, giving it an excellent base from which to challenge the premium German brands that will similarly offer a wide range of plug-in hybrid vehicles.
