In anticipation of the 50-year anniversary of Volvo's Torslanda Plant in Sweden, the company is celebrating this major milestone by adding a new wing to the facility. This new wing is expected to build 800,000 vehicles a year, including the new XC90.

Volvo has been noted for creating some of the top-safety vehicles for years, and with a new wing to produce more vehicles, it gives them the opportunity to continue to create safe vehicles for years to come.

Producing more than 800,000 cars a year is a huge jump from the 200,000-unit annual capacity the facility currently boasts, which is why it's Volvo's long-term goal. In the nearer-term, the automaker is aiming for 300,000 cars a year thanks to a new 258,000-square-foot-manufacturing facility. The building includes a body shop, which will manufacture the next-gen XC90 SUV launching the first quarter of next year.

The new plant, part of Volvo's $11 billion transformation plan, was inaugurated on the same day as the original Torslanda facility in 1964. Since that day, the plant has churned out more than 6.8 million cars, including such iconic models as the Amazon, P1800, 200-series, and 700-series.
