What's the Difference Between a Hybrid and a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)?

What is a Hybrid Vehicle?
Before diving into pure electric vs. hybrid, and the different types you'll find, let's look at the word "hybrid" a bit closer. The dictionary definition of "hybrid" means a combination of two separate things into one system. In the case of a hybrid vehicle, those two things are a gas engine and an electric motor.

The gas engine is a venerable invention and one that's served drivers well for almost a century. But, like the telephone, it can be improved upon. Thanks to the internal combustion process and countless moving parts, a gas engine's power output and efficiency can fluctuate at different RPMs and speed ranges.

For example, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine like the one you'd find in a Volvo XC60 mild hybrid for sale works with beautiful efficiency while cruising at highway speed. However, as you accelerate from a stop, the gas engine may not be able to handle the load with as much efficiency.

Meanwhile, an electric motor has far fewer moving parts and instantly delivers its power. It also linearly delivers that power, free from drops in efficiency at certain speeds. So, with those gas engine fluctuations we mentioned in mind, you can start to see the purpose here.

In essence, on a hybrid vehicle, the electric motor's power fills in any gaps left by the gas engine, maintaining the most efficient power delivery at all times.
What is a Full Hybrid Vehicle?
The charging methods, goals, and basic layouts are the same on a full hybrid as they are on a mild hybrid Volvo vehicle, but it adds all-electric driving capabilities into the mix.

How do Volvo Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles Work?
At a glance, both types of hybrid systems are similar. But, one major point in the mild hybrid vs. plug-in hybrid (PHEV) comparison is that a mild hybrid recharges via regenerative braking. PHEV models use regenerative braking, too, but the real difference, as the name suggests, is that you can plug one into a charging station to recharge the battery directly.

The next difference is that both the battery and electric motor are typically far larger in a PHEV. That's because they aren't only there to lend assistance but can also take over completely to allow for all-electric driving capabilities. With that larger motor/battery size comes more horsepower, and not only does a PHEV achieve excellent efficiency during normal driving conditions, it also achieves thrilling performance to boot.

So overall, you can think of PHEVs as your option for great efficiency, convenience, and performance, often coming with standard all-wheel drive thanks to the motor/engine layout and often giving the top horsepower of the vehicle range. With plug-in charging at home or at a public charging station, they're also a worry-free option.

Charging Your Volvo: How and Where?

If you're wondering how long it takes to charge your Volvo - the simple answer is that it depends on the charging equipment you use and the electric installation that you have at home. For regular and shorter charging times at home, Patrick Volvo Cars recommends a 3-phase 11kW wallbox. This installation can give you approximately 8 hours of charging time (from empty to 100%), or around 50-60 km range per hour.

Charging in a Standard 120V Home Outlet

If you buy a new Volvo without having the Home Charging
by ChargePoint yet, have no fear. You can simply plug in your
new Volvo to your wall outlet. The standard home charging cable with a household connector is primarily an auxiliary cable. If you charge a battery up to 100%, it usually takes approximately 40-72 hours depending on market, at a
charge rate of about 7-14km (or 4.4-8.7 miles) per hour.

*Comes standard with every electric Volvo purchase. No additional equipment needed.

Home Charging via 240V Wallbox

New to charging your car? For the ultimate in convenience, charge your car parked overnight at home with a Level 2,
240-volt home charger. For the best experience in charging
at home, Volvo recommends ChargePoint Home Flex. You
can adjust (up to 50 amps) and have the ability to add up
to 74 miles of range per hour. The ChargePoint Home Flex is up to 9X faster than a standard 120V wall outlet.

Flex here. Requires hardwired installation and may require electrical upgrades depending on your electrical panel capacity.

Public Charging

There may be times where you want to charge your Volvo while you're on the go. Finding public charging stations is easy! You can simply use the ChargePoint app, Google Maps or Apple Maps to find the nearest charging facility to you and you can even see pricing and the availability of stations, so that you're not stuck waiting to charge.

*For public charging within Chicagoland, we've seen average prices of $1-$4 for about 2 hours of charging time. However, it depends on the individual unit's owner to determine pricing.

Volvo Electric & Hybrid Battery Information

About the Battery

The Volvo battery is a 12V battery that powers the vehicle's primary electrical system (which includes the majority of the electrical equipment). The high-voltage battery is used to power the electric motor in your Volvo. For propulsion using the electric motor, the vehicle is equipped with a battery located underneath the vehicle. It's maintenance-free and is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Be sure to never disconnect the battery when the vehicle is running and make sure that the cables that're connected to the battery are connected correctly and the clamps are securely tightened. Note: The capacity of the hybrid battery diminishes somewhat over age and use, which could result in an increased usage of the gasoline engine (excluding XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, as it does not use gas) and consequently, slightly higher fuel consumption will occur. Although we highly recommend you schedule an appointment at Patrick Volvo Cars in Schaumburg, if you want to change the battery yourself, make sure to replace it with a battery of the same size, cold start capacity and type as the original battery (see the decal on the battery).

12V Battery Service Life and Capacity

The service life of the Volvo battery is influenced by many factors including the number of discharges and the climate conditions. If the vehicle hasn't been charged for a prolonged period of time, the battery's charge level decreases due to self-discharge. If the battery becomes discharged too many times, its service life will be shortened. A 12 V battery that's always kept fully charged has the maximum service life. The 12V AGM battery (Absorbed Glass Mat) is specifically designed for regenerative charging and supports the functionality of the car's different systems.
